Insurance - questions to ask your insurer
Before you decide on an insurer for your self catering holiday cottage, don't forget to compare the benefits they offer with our own benefits checklist.
However, there are things that are not always clearly spelled out in the insurer's policy summaries, so to help you we provided a further list of useful questions to ask your insurer:
- if I let my holiday home, so does this affect the insurance cover?
- when I need to make a repair following accident/damage, what is the process?
- can I authorise repairs myself straight away?
- can I handle the claim over the phone?
- who will deal with my claim?
- what excess(es) apply?
- are there limits to the amount that will be paid out?
- for the whole claim?
- for particular items?
- what contents items are not covered?
- what payment options are there?
- do I need to specify the value of the contents? If so, what happens if I’ve got this wrong?
- is their policy written in plain English?
- once I get the full policy is there a cancellation period? If so, are there any penalties for cancelling?
- what is the cancellation policy?
- are there any cancellation costs?
- are there any special restrictions that apply when the holiday home is not let? E.g.?
- telling the insurer
- draining central heating pipes
- is there a limit to the time it can remain unoccupied?
- does the property need to be checked regularly?
- are there requirements in terms of locks, window locks?
- what is the cost of the policy?
- is there any discount for booking online?
