Insurance - rebuilding and contents costs
Rebuilding costs
If you recently purchased your holiday home, then you should have a valuation provided by a surveyor which will include the costs of rebuilding your home.
Otherwise, if you find it difficult to know how much to insure the buildings for, then see the website for the Association of British Insurers, where there is an online Rebuilding Cost Calculator.
Costing your contents
Unfortunately there is no online calculator to work out the cost of replacing the contents of your holiday home! Instead it will require some work on your part. You need to work out how much it would cost to replace your entire inventory on a new-for-old basis.
If you don't have an inventory, then take the trouble to go through the house room by room and check all the contents, rather than relying on your memory! Also, don't forget the contents of outbuildings and the garden.
If you are reading this before you purchase the contents of your holiday home, then its a good time to make a note to keep a record of all purchases, preferably in some sort of spreadsheet, which will also help you add up the costs, and can be used later to provide an inventory.
Finally, don’t be tempted to underestimate how much your contents will cost in an attempt to keep down your premiums as this may affect the insurance payments in the event of a claim.
